Frequently Asked Questions:
- Why 185 degree angle of view ? Standard fisheye lenses capture up to 180 degrees angle of view. This does not provide sufficient image overlap for creating full immersive virtual tours from only 2 shots. Sunex Superfisheye provides the extra 5 degrees required for proper stitching process.
- What lens mounts are available with Sunex Superfishey lens ? Canon and Nikon mounts are available at the present time. Other camera mount will be introduced in the future.
- Is the SuperFisheye lens compatible with full frame DSLRs such as Canon 5D ? Yes. However because the full frame DSLRs have larger sensors, the image circle of the lens will only use the central portion of the sensor. Download diagram of lens image circle vs. DSLR sensor format .
- Can I use this lens on a Micro 4/3rd DSLRs such as Olympus E-P1 ? Yes. You would need a Canon to 4/3rd adapter. It is possible to get a complete 360 pano with just 3 shots.
- Does this lens have a variable aperture ? No. This lens is designed to have a fixed aperture of f/5.6. This value is optimized to achieve the best image quality (as trade-offs between aberration at low f/# and diffraction at high f/#) for both indoor and outdoor shots. A fixed aperture also simplifies the operation of the lens, and eliminates potential errors.
- Does this lens have auto-focus ? No. This lens has a fixed focus set at the factory for object distance of 1m. The depth of field is approximately 0.1m to infinity for a blur circle of 30um. It is 0.5m to infinity for a blur circle equal to a typical pixel (5.7um, calculate the depth of field for other blur circles). Fixed focus design eliminates potential for auto-focus errors and simplifies lens operation.
- What is the best way to achieve proper exposure ? You can use both aperture priority and manual modes for Canon cameras. In aperture priority mode (Av), you would need to choose "spot" or "centered" metering mode to achieve proper exposure. In manual exposure mode, you would need to adjust either shutter speed or ISO to achieve proper exposure (see question below for recommended settings). Only manual exposure mode ("M") should be used for Nikon cameras.
- What ISO and shutter speed settings do you recommend ? For indoor shots, ISO400 with shutter speed from 1/20sec to 1/40sec is recommended (Given the short focal length, camera shake is rarely a problem). For outdoor shots, we recommend 1/1000sec with ISO200-400. Depending on the lighting conditions, you may need to experiment with different settings to achieve the proper exposure.
- How do I optimize the focus of the lens for my camera ? The focus is set at 1m in the factory. If you would like to change that or optimize the focus for your camera to compensate for manufacturing tolerances, please follow Section 5 of the lens instruction manual.
- How do I minimize flare ? Avoid placing a bright light source near the edge of the image circle.
- How to correct lateral chromatic aberration ? Lateral chromatic aberration can be corrected by shooting images in RAW and post-processing using programs such as Adobe Camera Raw. Some new DSLR models such as Nikon D300 corrects lateral chromatic automatically in camera.
- Is Dewarper DSLR compatible with Apple Macs ? The current version only supports Windows PCs. A Mac version of the software will be released soon. Popular stitching software such as Realviz Stitcher and PTGui support both PC and Mac.
- What image editing software is compatible with Dewarper DSLR ? Any photo editing program that accepts Adobe Photoshop plug-ins will work with Dewarper DSLR. For example, Adobe Photoshop 7 or later, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 or later and Corel Paintshop Pro 7 or later.
- My camera model is not on the list of supported models by Dewarper DSLR, what can I do ? You can pick a supported camera model that has the same pixel size as yours.
- Why do I need a panoramic rotator ? If you want to create 360 degree virtual tour, a panoramic rotator is recommended because it allows you to take images at precise angular separation. This will produce a more "seamless" image when stitched together.
- How to create a 360x180 panorama from 2 shots ? Use Dewarper DSLR to create two 180x180 spherical panorama or 360x90 panorama (http://scotthaefner.com/kap/360panos/howmade/). Use the Photomerge feature within Photoshop/Elements to stitch the two images. For automatic stitching, we recommend commericially available stitching software such as Realviz Stitcher Unlimited DS and Easypano Panoweaver.
- What stitching software should I use ? We recommend Autodesk Stitcher Unlimited 2009, PTGui or Easypano. Autodesk Stitcher Unlimited 2009 is the easiest one to use with its dedicated Sunex lens support.
